Battle of the Toothbrushes

Patients often ask us if an electric or sonic toothbrush is better than a manual toothbrush. Although many people get excellent results from a traditional toothbrush, there are reasons to consider going with the power toothbrush.

  • People who suffer from arthritis or have limited hand dexterity may find a powered toothbrush makes the job much easier
  • For those wearing orthodontic appliances brushing may be more effective with an electric or powered toothbrush
  • Some studies show that regular may reduce the amount of plaque on teeth, and that helps fight gum disease

We will recommend a powered toothbrush for those patients whose daily brushing and flossing habits put them at risk for gum disease or other oral health issues.  If you have questions, please ask us during your next regular checkup.  The most important thing is to brush and floss twice a day, every day!

While there are no dental problems that are always evident as we age, there are a few common concerns.

Sensitivity to Hot and Cold
Sometimes caused by receding gum tissue, sensitivity and be treated several ways. You could switch to a toothpaste developed specifically for sensitive teeth, use a fluoride mouthwash or, in some cases, a soft tissue graft may be recommended.

Cavities
Unfortunately, you are never too old (or young) for cavities. Older adults may have new decay around old cavities or where tooth root surface is exposed due to receding gum tissue.

Dry Mouth
As we grow older dry mouth (reduced saliva) occurs naturally and can be intensified by certain medications. Without adequate saliva, food particles aren’t “washed” away, resulting in plaque and the acids it produces. Plaque leads to decay.

Steps to improve dry mouth include brushing or at least rinsing your mouth after meals, chewing sugar-free gum or sucking on sugar-free candy, and drinking plenty of water.

Please share any concerns you have as well as all medications you take with your dentist at each appointment. Dublin Dental Associates is your partner in excellent oral and dental healthcare!

Digital X-Rays: Hi-Tech Tools Improve Patient Services

Dublin Dental Associates uses only digital imaging technology to capture x-rays during patient exams.  While you may appreciate the convenience of digital there are many reasons we prefer this technology. Here are just a few:

  • Reduced exposure to radiation for patients
  • Instant images mean shorter appointments for patients
  • Environmentally friendly – no film or chemicals to dispose

We believe that providing the best care for our patients means utilizing the latest in technology. When you can do that and protect our environment, it’s a win-win solution!
